Profile for My Proper Care

The idea for this journal came about soon after my having received a crash course in assisted living and group homes.  Within a few weeks I thought I knew enough about the subject to be create an accurate brochure about how to find a good one.  Man was I wrong in that idea.  Crash courses are nothing compared to long time experience and I can now say there is most likely no such thing as a good assisted living or group home.  If there is one, it's so incredibly rare that it may as well not exist at all.

Instead, this journal will about what it takes to keep the one you love safe if they are ever forced into assisted living, a nursing home or a group home.

Please take note that I am not a lawyer and some of the methods I describe in this journal may be illegal in your state, regardless of the fact you're only trying to protect your loved one from harm.

Do you have interesting perspective to add?  Guest writers for this journal are completely welcome.   Please use the Contact link above to get in touch with me.

  • Documenting Group Home Neglect - Part 1 (added on 07-22-2011 @ 08:46 PM) It's been an exciting week for this humble writer. As I have mentioned before, some of what I write here comes from my experiences from being my girlfriend Amber's advocate. A week ago, while…
  • Legal "Neglect" (added on 07-13-2011 @ 07:28 PM) This is a two part in one post. Both parts emphasise the reality of what living in a assisted living group home is like. The first part demonstrates how caregivers legally use information from…
  • Group Home Garbage (added on 07-03-2011 @ 11:33 PM) I swore I would never use this particular journal to rant, but sometimes it takes a good old fashioned rant to get a point across. I am thoroughly pissed off so if this does…

  • Keeping notes of incidents. (added on 02-20-2011 @ 09:32 AM) As either a consumer or as an advocate, it is very important that you keep detailed notes. There is no such thing as paranoia when it comes to good note keeping. Write down…
  • Who are the people in your neighborhood? (added on 02-17-2011 @ 08:04 PM) As a guardian, advocate or even as a consumer in a group home or assisted living facility, it is important to have a complete understanding of all of the other people involved. Unless you…
  • Group Home Managers and Meerkats (added on 02-16-2011 @ 08:34 PM) This post today comes fresh on the heels of an ISP (Individual Service Plan) meeting for a group home consumer in Chandler, Arizona. I imagine the Department of Developmental Disabilities and possibly even other…
